North Korea's official news agency on Wednesday quoted an unnamed Foreign Ministry spokesman strongly criticizing senior US administration officials' "bellicose remarks" and the ongoing military exercises. Speaking to foreign correspondents at a December 7 end-of-year gathering jointly organized in Washington, D.C., by the Korea Foundation and George Washington University Institute for Korean Studies, Yun said Washington could attempt dialogue if 60 days pass without nuclear and missile provocations after a message from Pyongyang that it intends to stop.

He made the rare visit at the invitation of Pyongyang amid heightened tensions sparked by the North's November 29 test of a new intercontinental ballistic missile that it claims is capable of striking anywhere on the US mainland.

"The remaining question now is: when will the war break out", it said.

Pyongyang is seeking USA recognition as a nuclear weapons state.
