Nazareth Cuts Back Christmas Celebration Over Trump's Call On Jerusalem

Nazareth Cuts Back Christmas Celebration Over Trump's Call On Jerusalem”

The residents of Nazareth are primarily Arab citizens of Israel.

"Our identity and faith aren't up for debate", Salam told The Times of Israel.

"We are part of one single people", he continued, declaring that the US' decision on Jerusalem had taken "all the joy" from the holiday period. Among the casualties are a Christmas market and a festival, which are major tourist attractions.

Mayor Ali Salam - a Muslim - said Trump's decision "has taken away the joy of the holiday", the Times of Israel reported.

Mr Trump's decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital city, as UG Christian News reported, was a significant policy which triggered both applause and protests across the world.

Nazareth's imposing Basilica of the Annunciation is built on a site that many Christian faithful believe was the childhood home of Jesus' mother, Mary.

Former UGA assistant Pruitt accepts Tennessee job
Last year, Pruitt's defense led the nation in scoring defense, giving up just 13 points per game. Pruitt's hiring at Tennessee ends a lengthy, and rather embarrassing, coaching search.

The Brotherly Covenant, an NGO devoted to incorporating Christians into Israeli society, released a statement condemning the move and stated that cancelling Christmas in Nazareth would hinder chances at co-existence.

Mr Trump's decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital city, was a significant United States policy change.

Reuters reports that Nazareth isn't the only town to protest the move; within an hour of the announcement, the Palestinian towns of Bethlehem, Jesus's traditional birthplace, and Ramallah in the Israeli-occupied West Bank briefly switched off their Christmas lights in protest. The status of Jerusalem is at the center of Israel's conflict with the Palestinians because the city is sacred to Judaism and Islam.

The announcement to move the US embassy to Jerusalem was, meanwhile, hailed by other groups, including 250 prominent Israeli rabbis who issued Trump the biblical blessing that God gave to Joshua.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attends the weekly cabinet meeting in Jerusalem, Sunday, Jan. 22, 2017. Muslims oppose the move as they see East Jerusalem as a future capital for Palestine. According to the New Testament, Jesus also grew up in the town.

"President Trump has made a bold and courageous stand that will be remembered in history forever, like President Harry Truman, who made a bold and courageous decision to recognize Israel at statehood", Hagee said. "This shows the world that Jerusalem as the capital of Israel is not up for negotiation, and America is and shall always remain a loyal ally of Israel".
