United States vetoes United Nations resolution against Trump's Jerusalem decision

United States vetoes United Nations resolution against Trump's Jerusalem decision”

The US has vetoed a UN Security Council resolution calling for the rejection of Donald Trump's decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

The draft resolution was initially circulated by Egypt, expressed deep regret at the recent decision and affirmed that "any decisions and actions which purport to have altered the character, status or demographic composition" of Jerusalem "have no legal effect, are null and void and must be rescinded". "The draft resolution is not adopted due to a negative vote of a permanent member", said Koro Bessho, Japan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations who presides Security Council in December.

Al Jazeera reports that the draft "did not mention the USA by name", in an apparent effort to keep Washington from using its power of veto.

The resolution was denounced in furious language by the USA ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, who described it as "an insult" that would not be forgotten.

"The United States has the sovereignty to determine where and whether we establish an embassy", said Haley, describing the vote as an "insult" that "won't be forgotten".

Presidential spokesperson Nabil Abu Rudeina denounced the U.S. veto, calling it a mockery of the global community and a concession to Israeli occupation and aggression. Thank you, President Trump.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu thanked the US for using its veto in a video posted to Facebook.

Britain's Permanent Representative Matthew Ryrcroft reflected the views of the other members when he said the United States decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital had no legal affect and his country disagreed with it.

In the fairy tale, can't-we-all-get-along world Mr. Weinstein inhabits, supporting or voting on fancy-sounding proposals is all it takes to make himself feel like a good guy and to fool other people into believing that he is "doing something" when he's not.

The Palestinians slammed the veto as "unacceptable" and vowed to turn to the UN General Assembly to win adoption for the resolution that was blocked at the council.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, for his part, strongly attacked the United States and accused it of supporting Zionist work in Palestine since its inception.

Israel took over East Jerusalem in the 1967 war and declared the whole city of Jerusalem as its eternal capital in 1980.

In a widely anticipated vote, Washington exercised their veto power on Monday to block UN Security council resolution backed by 14 other Council members that would have forced Trump to retract his recent contested declaration over the status of the much-coveted holy city.

In Netanyahu's words, "One defeated the many, truth defeated lies".

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas the USA should no longer be involved in brokering a Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement.

It came ahead of a planned trip by the US vice-president, Mike Pence, to Jerusalem on Wednesday that was set to take place amid a deep rupture in U.S.
