Astronaut John Young, who walked on moon, dies at 87

Astronaut John Young, who walked on moon, dies at 87”

John Young, one of only 12 people to have walked on the Moon, has died aged 87, NASA has announced.

In NASA's history, few astronauts were more accomplished than John Young.

Young, is known for flying to the Moon twice, walked on the Moon's surface and flew the first Space Shuttle mission.

Young, who went to space six times, died on Friday night at his home in Houston following complications from pneumonia, National Aeronautics and Space Administration spokesman Allard Beutel said in an email.

"Barbara and I join our fellow Americans and many friends in the space community in mourning the loss of astronaut John Young", Bush said in a statement.

Throughout the 1990s and into the 2000s, Mr Young maintained Nasa should be developing massive rockets to lift payloads to the moon to industrialise it, he said, and building space systems for detecting and deflecting comets or asteroids that could threaten Earth. It's not like being in zero gravity, you know.

Then, in 1966, he flew as Commander on Gemini 10, the first mission to rendezvous with two separate spacecrafts on the course of a single flight.

It was on this mission that Young pulled his sandwich stunt, which did not make NASA brass happy but certainly pleased Grissom, the recipient of the snack.

NASA later rebuked Young for the antics, which generated criticism from lawmakers and the media, but his career did not suffer.

The next year, on Gemini 10, Young and Mike Collins completed a dual docking and other manoeuvres as prelude to the Apollo program's quest to put a man on the moon.

Counting his takeoff from the moon in 1972 as commander of Apollo 16, Young's blastoff tally stood at seven, for decades a world record. Spanning three generations of spaceflight, he went on to fly in space six times.

Chastened by the 1967 Apollo launch pad fire that killed three astronauts, Mr Young spoke up after the 1986 Challenger launch accident.

Former president George H.W. Bush called Young a "good friend" in a statement. "He was a fearless patriot whose courage and commitment to duty helped our nation push back the horizon of discovery at a critical time". "He was in every way the 'astronaut's astronaut.' We will miss him".

Born on September 24th, 1930, Young attended the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he earned his degree in aeronautical engineering in 1952. He eventually became a Navy fighter and test pilot.
