The top court, however, preserved that the states were under a constitutional duty to maintain law and order.

He said the organisation had called for a shutdown across the country on January 25 to protest against the film's screening.

Earlier, the apex court refused to entertain a plea filed by lawyer Manohar Lal Sharma who claimed that the certificate issued by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to "Padmaavat" was illegal.

However, he warned, in case cinema halls screened the movie, they will be responsible for the consequences. The movie was slated to hit the theatres by December, 2017, but due to strong opposition from Rajput groups, the release date was postponed.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali also recently sent an invitation to Karni Sena and other Rajput associations to watch Padmaavat. On November 20 past year, Chouhan had assured a Rajput delegation that the movie wouldn't be released until corrections were made "as per public demand".

A day after ruling that the film Padmaavat can not be banned by states on account of potential law and order trouble, the SC on Friday, also rejected a plea seeking urgent hearing on a fresh PIL that sought cancellation of Censor Board's certificate granted to the movie.
