Google Starts Selling Audiobooks in Latest Challenge to Amazon

Google Starts Selling Audiobooks in Latest Challenge to Amazon”

Today, Google announced that it is launching audiobooks on Google Play in 45 countries and nine languages.

While Amazon dominates the USA audiobooks market, Google's major advantage is that its service is available in 45 countries, according to James McQuivey, VP at research firm Forrester.

Those who purchase audiobooks via the Google Play Store will be able to access them on Android, iOS, and the web.

Also, users can start off the morning by listening to an audiobook with the Assistant on their phone, and continue listening with the Google Play Books app on a tablet. Not only can you ask Google Assistant to start reading your book, you can do things like set a sleep timer or get more information about a particular author.

After speculations, audiobooks are now officially available on the Google Play Store.

Audiobooks are now finally available on the Google Play Store - the fact that they weren't there to begin with is somewhat surprising.

Google won't offer a subscription pricing plan like Audible does. The company immediately becomes a major player to be reckoned with. Google really only has one killer feature that might entice Audible listeners away from its massive catalogue of audiobooks, and that's family sharing. In addition to single titles, Audible has also been running a popular subscription service for audiobooks.

To conclude, we should note that playing audiobooks can be done across multiple devices, so users will be able to resume their reading from the exact point they left off no matter which device they choose to use. Interestingly, Google's audiobooks don't need you to subscribe to it to use it, initially. An added value proposition is that Audible books sync with the Kindle version, meaning that you can listen to your book in the auto, and read it when you get home.

Although India seems to among the supported countries, the audiobooks page us now coming up empty for me in Google Play, but it may change in the few hours or by the morning. You can go to the Google Play website now and pick the titles you want read to you.
