This Mummified Woman Now Has A Name - And A Famous Relative

This Mummified Woman Now Has A Name - And A Famous Relative”

A decades-old mystery involving the identity of a mummified woman in Switzerland has been solved, unearthing a surprise twist - she's reportedly a relative of Boris Johnson.

A syphilitic mummified corpse dating back to the 18th century has been identified as Anna Catharina Bischoff, the great-great-great-great-great-great-grandmother of the foreign secretary.

While there was no gravestone to identify her, and her coffin was unmarked, she was buried in front of the altar, which is a symbol of great importance, and was wearing good quality clothes.

The body was preserved with a high level of mercury which is often a sign that person has been treated for syphills.

A surprisingly well-preserved corpse was discovered in 1975 during restoration work at the Barfüsser Church in the Swiss city of Basel.

It only became clear previous year, based on newly discovered archives, that the mummy had been uncovered once before, in 1843.

Another clue: her body was riddled with mercury - a standard treatment for syphilis from the late 15th to the 19th Century.

A new study of the body extracted DNA from the mummy's big toe, and this was compared to descendants of the Bischoff line.

Historians then concluded, through thousands of hours in the Basel State Archives, that the mummy was a member of a well-established local family, the Bischoffs. A 99.8 per cent match was found, and the relationship to the Johnson family is confirmed by records of births, deaths and marriages.

She had contracted syphilis, probably from treating sufferers of the disease. She also appears to have been well-fed.

On the death of her husband she returned to her home town of Basel, and apparently underwent rigorous mercury treatment in the hope of a cure.

Bischoff was born in 1719 into a wealthy Basel family and married a pastor before having seven children, two of whom survived to become adults.

One of those girls, also named Anna, married Christian Hubert Baron Pfeffel von Kriegelstein - and Boris's dad Stanley Johnson arrived six generations later.

The couple's daughter, Yvonne, married Osman Wilfred Johnson Kemal and their son, Stanley Johnson, is Boris Johnson's father.

Perhaps you will take inspiration from the foreign secretary for your dinner tonight.
