White Sox legend Jim Thome elected to Baseball Hall of Fame”

Chipper Jones led a group of four former players selected for the Baseball Hall of Fame's Class of 2018 in voting revealed Wednesday by the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

It was from talking with Tom Kelly a few times, and having him say that, as an opposing manager, the hitter he feared the most when facing the Mariners was Martinez. Controversial candidates Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds again fell short of the threshold, getting 57.3 percent and 56.4 percent of the vote, respectively.

Jones, the 1999 NL MVP, played 19 seasons, all of them with the Atlanta Braves. In 93 career postseason games, Jones batted.287 (97-for-338) with 13 home runs and his 97 hits are the most of any National Leaguer in Major League Baseball history.

Chipper Jones, Vladimir Guerrero, Jim Thome, and Trevor Hoffman all got the call. The fact that he played for the Montreal Expos helped, too, so even people who weren't baseball fans knew who he was. Still, Hoffman scored 79.9 percent of the vote, putting him above the 75 percent required for induction. Hoffman sits second all-time in most career saves, sitting just behind Mariano Rivera.

Pierson's Chipper Jones was a almost unanimous selection Wednesday to the Baseball Hall of Fame. At 42, he is also the youngest member of the Baseball Hall of Fame.

"I didn't sleep", he said.

From players who made it to those who didn't, as well as how the controversial figures fared in 2018, we have 10 interesting takeaways from the 2018 Hall of Fame voting.

But the government is citing a list of persons or entities that it is boycotting because of links to Israel. Lebanese law prohibits any contact between Lebanese and Israeli citizens, even in a third country.

"It's a big number, a special, special number", Thome told the Star Tribune at the time. Four players were elected, bringing the total for the last five years to 16. You can debate whether a designated hitter should be in the Hall but for better or worse, the DH is part of the game and that's the position Martinez played.

Clemens, victor of 354 games and seven Cy Young Awards, got 57.3 percent after drawing 54.1 percent last time.

His 449 career home runs are tied with fellow Hall of Famer Jeff Bagwell for 40th in Major League Baseball history. During his 13 years with the Indians, Thome had a.287/.414/.566 slash line (152 OPS+) with 337 home runs, 937 RBIs, and 264 doubles in 4,711 at-bats.

Jones' name was on 97.2 percent of the ballots.

I sincerely hope Clemens and Bonds break the 75 percent barrier before their time is up on the ballot. The latter six did not receive a single vote. Having covered the steroid era, my personal opinion has always been that their inclusion would be a stain on the Hall of Fame. That completes his sixth year on the ballot.

"It's not an easy thing to do, hitting a home run, it's really not". But his peak years also came during his time with the Rockies and it's impossible to say with certainty that playing elsewhere would have vastly diminished his numbers.
