White House proposes path to citizenship for 1.8 million people”

-The White House has unveiled a proposal that provides a pathway to citizenship for 1.8 million young immigrants living in the country illegally, in exchange for new restrictions on legal immigration and $25 billion in border security.

The White House said any deal must include $25 billion in funding for the border wall, the central plank of Trump's presidential campaign.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the new White House immigration deal for some "Dreamers" actually "represents a compromise that members of both parties can support".

Former president Barack Obama created the DACA program in 2012 effectively shielding illegal immigrants brought to the children from deportation and offering them work permits.

According to Trump's proposal, the undocumented immigrants could become USA citizens over a 10 to 12 year period if they met certain requirements.

The visa lottery, which was used by the perpetrator of November's NYC driving attack, would also be eliminated under the White House's plan.

The plan would not allow parents of those immigrants to seek lawful status, the officials said.

"We've been playing this game for quite a while", Graham said after about 20 senators billing themselves as the "common sense coalition" met in Collins' office.

Trump has also argued for ending "chain" migration, the practice of allowing the extended family members of people who already have United States citizenship to immigrate.

"Under the White House framework, young-adult illegal border crossers and visa overstayers would get immediate benefits, including, most importantly, the right to compete with Americans in the permanent job market".

President Donald Trump ended the DACA program in September, citing its likely unconstitutionality, and told Congress it had until March 2018 to codify it into law.

"Today's DACA recipients can be tomorrow's Trump Dreamers", he said.

At least 23 Dreamers will be in the public galleries in the House of Representatives chamber as guests of Democratic lawmakers, according to a list provided today by a congressional aide.

The Senate struck a deal on immigration reform in 2013, but it was ignored in the Republican-dominated House.

Anti-immigration activists also assailed the plan, though for the opposite reason.

"It's a letdown because if this were the end result after fighting in Congress and you had to either take this or nothing, I don't know, I can't say that I would definitely say no", he said. Indeed, he believes there should be no path to citizenship for the DACA population, never mind the "Dreamers". "Doing so is inconsistent with the promises we made to the men and women who elected us".

That could make the plan hard to get past Democrats, no matter how strong they want the Dreamers reform. (It's propsed cuts in legal immigration alone could add up to 40 percent.) If Democrats balk at betraying other immigrants to save this one group, Trump can turn around and blame them when he starts deporting the DACA recipients.
