U.S. slaps arms embargo on South Sudan, urges United Nations to do same”

In this photo taken Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2018, United Nations peacekeepers from India stand guard at their new base in Akobo town, one of the last rebel-held strongholds in South Sudan.

The IGAD which mediates the process, the African Union and the global community said frustrated by the failure of the warring parties in South Sudan to commit themselves to the humanitarian truce and to create a conducive environment for the revitalization process. "Approximately 2.4-million South Sudanese have fled as refugees to neighboring countries and 1.9-million South Sudanese are internally displaced", she said.

Some top officials close to Kiir have already been sanctioned by the United States, including the once-powerful army chief Paul Malong, who was later fired and forced into exile when he quarreled with the president.

The process will discuss concrete measures to restore permanent ceasefire; full and inclusive implementation of the Agreement on Resolution of Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (ARCSS); and develop a revised and realistic timeline and implementation schedule towards a democratic election at the end of the transition period.

"We need to act against those who, with impunity, are continuing to massacre their peaceful populations", the head of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, told reporters at the AU Summit held in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.

"Additionally, the United States is seeking support for a UN Security Council embargo on all arms flows into South Sudan and we urge all UNSC members to join us in supporting this action".

Any US push for the U.N. Security Council to take further action against South Sudan is likely to be resisted by veto power Russian Federation.

South Sudan's leaders aren't just failing their people, "they are betraying them", Ms Haley said. "There are agitators sending negative messages to the social media, to the worldwide community, that Juba is insecure", Michael Makuei Lueth, South Sudan's Minister of Information, told CPJ.

South Sudan gained independence in 2011 but fell into a civil war in 2013, with tens of thousands killed and almost 4 million displaced since.
