Zuma's fate to be decided today

Zuma's fate to be decided today”

Zuma's second and final term as president is due to end in mid-2019.

EFF president Julius Malema has requested that the motion of no confidence against President Jacob Zuma on February 22 be held through a secret ballot.

Mashatile's remarks come amid increasing calls for Zuma to resign ahead of Thursday's State of the Nation Address (Sona).

"The ANC's top six officials will meet Zuma this evening to discuss his exit", stated the report.

The ANC's national executive and working committees have instructed the top six - led by Cyril Ramaphosa - to manage the transition of power from Zuma to Ramaphosa‚ and most recently‚ to tell Zuma to step down.

Zuma has survived several no-confidence votes during his rule thanks to loyal voting by ANC lawmakers, who form a strong parliamentary majority.

Opposition parties have been calling on the ANC to remove the 75-year-old president, whose time in office has been marred by several allegations of corruption. However, Zuma still has support within the top 6 with Secretary General Ace Magashule and his deputy Jessie Duarte defending his continued stay at Union Buildings.

"The majority of parliament is going to say that Jacob Zuma will not be the president of South Africa because the biggest sentiment, even in the ANC, is saying that Jacob Zuma can not continue as president", EFF Deputy President Floyd Shivambu told eNCA television.

Until Zuma was recalled from office, action against state capture would be limited, and talk about eradicating corruption would remain hollow, and somewhat meaningless, FutureSA said.

"That is why tonight we are meeting with President Zuma", said Mantashe to some applause in the St John Apostolic Faith Mission church on Sunday afternoon.

The officials met Zuma at the Presidential Guesthouse on Sunday night.

Lukhona Mnguni, political analyst at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, said Zuma could take his chances and wait for the no-confidence motion rather than decide to resign.
