Ancient Tomb Discovered In Egypt Believed To Be Over 4300 Years Old”

Egypt has unveiled a 4,400-year-old tomb discovered near the country's famed pyramids at the Giza plateau just outside Cairo, a find that authorities hope will help revive the country's staggering tourism sector.

It likely belonged to a woman known as Hetpet, who archaeologists believe was close to ancient Egyptian royals of the 5th Dynasty.

The tomb, found near Cairo is adorned with well-preserved and rare wall paintings depicting the priestess, Hetpet, in a variety of scenes.

The paintings also show two scenes featuring monkeys, popular pets at the time, one reaping fruit and another dancing before an orchestra, Al-Waziri said.

Egypt: 4400 years of age Tomb found on the outskirts of Cairo

The tomb was found during excavation work carried out in the Giza West Field's cemetery, which houses tombs of the Old Kingdom's top officials and was discovered by previous archaeologists back in 1842. Similar scenes have been found in other tombs belonging to the later 12th dynasty, according to the antiquities ministry's statement. However, the tomb itself was discovered in October 2017, according... The discovery, first of the year from Egypt, gives more insights into the ancient life of Hetpet whose name was first found on ancient antiques unearthed from the same site. "We expect to find more", Al-Waziri told reporters at the site. Egyptian Antiquities Minister Khaled al-Anani announced the discovery Saturday.

Al-Waziri believes there are other ancient artifacts waiting to be uncovered near the site. "This is the first archeological discovery in 2018 but it will not be the last, it is expected that we will announce a new archeological discovery in the upcoming few weeks", recounted Anany.

In January, Egypt placed the ancient statue of one of its most famous pharaohs, Ramses II, in the museum's atrium, which will hold 43 massive statues.

The tomb, which can be dated back to the Fifth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom or High Empire (2650-2100 BC), is decorated with paintings that show ancient Egyptian life from almost 4,000 years ago.
