Yameen, who has rolled back a series of democratic reforms during his five years in office, has said that the court overstepped its authority in ordering the politicians released, saying the order "blatantly disrupts the systems of checks and balances".

The emergency comes after Yameen earlier defied the court's ruling to free the opposition leaders.

In a tweet, Nasheed, on the behalf of Maldivian people "humbly requested" for India to send envoy backed by military to release the arrested Supreme Court judges and other political prisoners including former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

Former president and current opposition leader Mohamed Nasheed described the government's refusal to obey the supreme court as a "coup".

He sent in security forces to storm the Supreme Court building and ordered the arrest of his estranged half-brother, former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who has sided with the opposition.

"We had to find out how thick the plot or coup was", he said, adding that the chief justice was trying to illegally impeach him and sack the attorney general.

With Maldives in turmoil following a face-off between the government and its Supreme Court, India is expected to follow a standard operating procedure (SOP) that includes keeping the troops in readiness, government sources indicated today.

"We are working on making sure we can respect the Supreme Court order in a way that doesn't cause any difficulties to the people", he said at a rally in his support organised by his party.

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said he was "gravely concerned" about the Maldives situation.
