'Frasier' Star John Mahoney Has Passed Away

'Frasier' Star John Mahoney Has Passed Away”

But, Mahoney was perhaps best known for his role as "Martin Crane", otherwise known as "Frasier's dad", on the hit show Frasier.

One sister, who moved to the Midwest after marrying a USA sailor, was responsible for Mahoney's decision to make his life in America.

"John Mahoney was a fixture on the Chicago stage", Mayor Rahm Emanuel said in remembrance.

IRISH AMERICAN actor and Frasier star John Mahoney has died aged 77. He moved to the United States at 19, becoming a US citizen in 1959 and settled in IL under his sister's sponsorship.

He was living in Chicago, where he was employed as the editor of The Journal for the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals.

Mahoney's manager, Paul Martino, confirmed to media that Mahoney died while in hospice care.

Ironically, Mahoney actually appeared in the final season of Cheers before joining Frasier, but it was in a different role - a jingle writer named Sy Flembeck who actually shared a scene with Frasier Crane (Kelsey Grammer).

"I give up nothing (professionally) by being in Chicago", said Mahoney, who at the time was preparing to begin rehearsal on a Steppenwolf Theatre Company production of "The Herd".

In 1986, he won a Tony Award for his role in John Guare's The House of Blue Leaves. Mahoney starred in the Broadway revival of the play Prelude to a Kiss, as well as the plays Better Late and The Outgoing Tide at the Northlight Theatre in IL.

With the 1987 release Tin Men, Mahoney made his feature film debut. He also played in Moonstruck, Say Anything and Barton Fink. Other film credits include Eight Men Out (1988), Say Anything (1989), Reality Bites (1994) and Dan in Real Life (2007).

Most recently, Mahoney had a six-episode stint on the TV Land sitcom Hot in Cleveland and appeared on the British drama series, Foyle's War.

John was intensely private about his personal life, but is thought to have never married, despite previously claiming to have been in several relationships.
