Suspect in crash that killed Indianapolis Colts player, Uber driver formally charged”

The illegal immigrant suspected in the drunk driving death of an Indianapolis Colts player and Uber driver was convicted a year ago under an alias, in prosecutors said Tuesday.

Police said Jackson, who grew up in Atlanta, and Uber driver Jeffrey Monroe, 54, were standing outside Monroe's vehicle along I-70 after Jackson became ill while Monroe was transporting him for the ride-hailing company.

Investigators say the suspect, 37-year-old Manuel Orrego-Savala, has twice been deported from the USA and was illegally living in the country at the time of Sunday's crash in Indianapolis. According to the complaint, immigration officers arrested and deported him in October 2006 and again in March 2009.

Manuel Orrego-Zavala was charged Wednesday by prosecutors in the state of Indianapolis with four felony counts of failing to remain at the scene of an accident and causing a deadly accident while drunk. Jackson, 26, and Monroe, 54, were stopped on the side of the interstate.

Jackson, who grew up in Atlanta, started eight games for the Colts during the 2016 season, finishing third on the team with 61 tackles.

The driver of the truck that killed Jackson and ride-sharing operator Jeffrey Monroe had been using the alias Alex Cabrera Gonsales, the police said in a release.

Orrego-Savala appeared Tuesday before a judge who advised him of his rights. Orrega-Savala has a 2005 conviction for DUI.

I just seen on my phone one of my former teammates Edwin Jackson was killed by a drunk driver.

Orrego-Savala does not now have an attorney, but one will be appointed before Wednesday morning's initial hearing.

President Donald Trump drew added attention to Indianapolis Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson's death on Twitter, calling the highway collision that killed him and another man "disgraceful".

Both men were outside the vehicle when a black Ford F-150 drove into the shoulder and struck the auto.

Marion County prosecutors planned to announce Wednesday before 37-year-old Manuel Orrego-Savala's initial hearing whether he'll face criminal charges in Sunday's crash along Interstate 70 in Indianapolis.

Jackson's friend Chad Bouchez said he would not want his death to be politicized.

Mr Monroe and Jackson were pronounced dead at the scene by the Marion County Coroner's Office.

In the 2005 case, he pleaded no contest to two separate drunken-driving offenses and was given a brief jail sentence, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said Tuesday.

Meyer says he is working with Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry about opening an investigation into possible identity crimes Orrego-Savla may have committed while living in Indiana.

Trump also offered his "prayers and best wishes" to Jackson's family. Always happy. always uplifting. always humble.he was a true shining light on this earth.Such an incredibly sad day for anybody who has ever been lucky enough to be around or befriend Edwin Jackson.
