New Horizons Snaps Farthest Image Ever Taken From Earth”

That image has held the record for the farthest ever taken away from Earth-until now. In preparation for these, the probe also established new records when it used its Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) to take a series of long-distance pictures.

The space probe was even farther from home than NASA's Voyager 1 when it captured the famous "Pale Blue Dot" image of Earth.

NASA's New Horizons spacecraft captured these images at a distance of 3.79 billion miles from Earth - the farthest from our planet an image has ever been made. NASA says mission controllers will "bring the spacecraft out of its electronic slumber" this coming summer in anticipation of its next major close encounter, with an object known as 2014 MU69 on January 1, 2019.

According to reports, the craft achieved the major milestone while drifting farther and farther through the outer boundaries of the solar system late past year.

Voyager 1's cameras were turned off shortly after that portrait, leaving its distance record unchallenged for more than 27 years. According to a NASA press release, two hours later, it snapped images of KBOs 2012 HZ84 and 2012 HE85, setting yet another record.

"New Horizons just couldn't be better...we're bearing down on our flyby target", said lead scientist Alan Stern of the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado.

South Korean president to meet Kim Jong Un's sister
Marc Knapper, the interim US ambassador to South Korea, indicated to USA media that the exercises will be held in April. Kim is the youngest daughter of the late North Korean leader Kim Jong Il.

New Horizons originally launched way back in early 2006, and it the spacecraft has made close passes of a number of planets during its more than a decade of cruising through our Solar System.

The photo surpassed the "Pale Blue Dot" images of Earth taken by Voyager 1 back in 1990. There, NASA says it plans for New Horizons to make flyby investigations of at least two dozen objects, such as "dwarf planets and 'Centaurs, ' former [Kuiper Belt objects] in unstable orbits that cross the orbits of the giant planets".

It's not the first time New Horizons has managed an unprecedented feat. Data is stored in a solid-state recorder (the only moving parts in these flash memory devices are the electrons) on New Horizons and is then transmitted via radio waves.

Getting the images to Earth is no easy task.

New Horizons is still on an active mission to visit the Kuiper Belt. These images once again broke the record for being the most distant images taken from Earth (again), but also set a new record for the closest-ever images ever taken of KBOs.

New Horizons is now traveling about 700,000 miles (1.1M km) every single day.
