Canadian men's hockey team loses 3-2 in shootout to Czech Republic

Canadian men's hockey team loses 3-2 in shootout to Czech Republic”

The Czech Republic men's ice hockey team edged out South Korea 2-1 on Thursday but had to come from behind against an impressive Olympic debut performance by the host country.

Canada had a chance to extend the game in the shootout, but Maxim Noreau hit the post, which clinched the triumph for the Czech Republic.

The Czechs are installed at +218 to prevail in regulation after barely squeaking out a 2-1 win over a plucky Korean side.

Maybe the Canadians will get some help from other teams, but if they don't advance straight to the quarter-finals after the preliminary round, they will have to play a qualification game to earn a spot in the quarters.

The men's Olympic tournament is being played without NHL players for the first time since the 1994 Games in Norway's Lillehammer, after the league and the International Olympic Committee failed to agree on covering players' travel and insurance costs.

Canada coach Willie Desjardins had asked for more consistency from his non-NHL team and said he felt he got it.

Canada has dominated its opponents 33-20 in shots. "Like if you give everything you've got, then what happens happens and you move onto the next game and you look for some adjustments and you come back ready".

Defenseman Chris Lee fanned on a bouncing puck to the right of the Canadian net, and Kubalik grabbed it and squeezed it between Scrivens and the post, knotting the game at 1-1.

Canada's Mat Robinson lost the puck on a breakaway to miss the best over-time chance either team enjoyed. He went down but the puck went to Noreau at the point and his shot found its way to Bourque who, finding a seam between two defenders in front, put it away at 13:30. Scrivens stopped a pair of shots from Roman Horak and Michal Birner, but couldn't contain the rebounds, and former Carolina Hurricane Michal Jordan snatched the loose puck and went top shelf.
