Trump endorses Romney in run for US Senate seat in Utah”

Mitt Romney says he has a cordial relationship with President Donald Trump but would continue to speak out when he disagrees with the president if elected to the U.S. Senate seat in Utah now held by retiring Orrin Hatch.

Romney even said that he would have rejected Trump's 2012 endorsement of his presidential run in a 2016 tweet in light of Trump's attacks on minorities.

If elected to the seat that Hatch, R-Utah, has held since 1976, Romney has said he believes the relationships he has already built in Washington, D.C., would position him better than the average freshman senator.

The two have not always gotten along in the past.

Mitt Romney used his first big speech as a Utah Senate candidate to call for action to prevent another deadly mass shooting like the one at a Florida high school that killed 17 people.

Shortly after Trump's tweet, Romney wrote on Twitter: "Thank you Mr. President for the support".

"Utah welcomes legal immigrants from around the world - Washington sends immigrants a message of exclusion", Romney said in a video on February 16 without mentioning Trump by name.

"I see way too much demagoguery and populism on both sides of the aisle, and I only hope and aspire we'll see more greatness", he said in March 2016.

Romney said last week he generally approved of Trump's agenda, but would not hesitate to call out the president if needed.

Romney announced Friday he would run to replace retiring Senator Orrin Hatch. For instance, Mr Romney has been critical of Mr Trump's response to the events in Charlottesville, Virginia past year when a white supremacist drove through a crowd of demonstrators killing one. Lindsey Graham who have now become allies.

For his part, Romney gave a scathing critique of then-candidate Trump during the GOP primary that year, calling him a "phony" who was unfit for office.

Before moving into the White House, Trump pursued Romney for a potential secretary of state nominations, but eventually pegged former Exxon Mobile CEO Rex Tillerson for the gig.

In a famously scathing speech delivered in the midst of the presidential campaign in March 2016, the former MA governor who ran unsuccessfully against President Obama in 2012 called Trump a "con man" whose promises are "as worthless as a degree from Trump University".
