United States to reveal drill plan next month”

A DATE for the start of delayed US and South Korean military drills will be announced soon after the Paralympics end next month, Seoul's Defence Minister said today. Because of the Olympics, however, they made a decision to postpone the teachings which North Korea perceived as preparation for an invasion of its territory.

Analysts say the Games-driven bonhomie on the peninsula may not last long once the sporting festivals are over, particularly once Key Resolve, a command post drill, and the Foal Eagle theatre-level field exercise begin.

"The [President Donald] Trump group's racket for resuming the war exercises is a wild act of ruthlessly trampling even a small sprout of peace that has been now seen on the Korean peninsula, and it is a provocative act of chilling the active efforts of [North Korea] and enthusiasm of the worldwide community to defuse tension and create a peaceful environment", read a release from North Korea's state-media wing the Korean Central News Agency.

Song said Seoul and Washington maintain their joint stance that the annual military drills were delayed in the spirit of the Olympics and until the Winter Games are over, the allies will neither confirm nor deny future plans.

With the start date for the large-scale exercises yet to be confirmed, Seoul's Defense Ministry reported to lawmakers Tuesday that South Korea and the USA will conduct their spring Key Resolve manoeuvres to defend against the North's missile threat, according to Yonhap News Agency.

Taking aim at the joint exercises, one commentary slammed Marc Knapper, the current charge d'affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Seoul, who said earlier this month that the drills would be conducted in April.

Teenager Wins First US Gold Medal at Pyeongchang Olympics
Gerard becomes the youngest U.S. snowboarder to win an Olympic medal since the sport made its Games debut at Nagano 1998. Gerard tried the sport as a toddler then took it up with a passion aged eight when his family moved closer to the snow.

The start date will be announced by the two allies between the end of the Paralympics on March 18 and the beginning of April, Seoul's defense minister Song Young-moo was quoted as telling the National Assembly by a ministry spokesman.

But the communist state hates the joint war games, which are held in the spring and the fall, and warned on Monday that a move to restart them would be "a wild act of ruthlessly trampling even a small sprout of peace that has been now seen on the Korean peninsula". South Korean media report that the United States is preparing to dispatch advanced attack drones capable of attacking North Korean leaders or missile sites during that period.

It remains unclear if Moon might ask the US for an even further delay to the military exercises, but Michiel Hoogeveen, an independent researcher focusing on North Korea, called Tuesday's announcement "a great test" that could reveal both sides true intentions.

-South Korea drills practice for an invasion and overthrow of the North's regime.

North Korea has won positive press for their Olympic diplomatic maneuvers.

The North's response continued: "It is a provocative act of chilling the active efforts of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and enthusiasm of the worldwide community to defuse tension and create a peaceful environment".

North Korea's official name is the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
