The Observatory said the bombardment had killed more than 106 adults and children in eastern Ghouta on Tuesday alone.

But the situation has dramatically worsened in recent days when a wide-scale military offensive on Eastern Ghouta was in place, preparing to end the presence of al-Qaida-linked groups in that area.

Even though these attacks have claimed lives of adults and children alike, the regime maintains these are "precision strikes".

"Where is the global community, where is (the UN) Security Council... they abandoned us".

Rebels retaliated by hitting some Damascus neighbourhoods with mortar shells, killing eight, including three children, and wounding 15 people, according to the state news agency SANA.

"There are attempts from some global and local sides for a truce process in eastern Ghouta and they have not succeeded so far", said Mohammad Alloush, the political chief of Jaish al-Islam, one of the main rebel factions in eastern Ghouta. Russian Federation must end its support of the Assad regime and its allies. The Syrian government claims that the only civilians who remain in the enclave are being used as human shields by the rebels, the New York Times reports.

But fighting has escalated recently as the Syrian military and its allied forces appear to be launching an all-out operation to re-take the area, which is one of the last areas near Damascus still under control of the armed opposition.

In Brussels, Syrian opposition leader Nasr al-Hariri - a delegation head at stalled United Nations peace talks - pleaded for more worldwide pressure on Assad to stop. France, a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, described the bombardment as a serious violation of global humanitarian law.

"We are able to maintain supply lines of some basic medical essentials to the facilities we support, and we are also providing ad-hoc medical donations to facilities we do not regularly support when they are in dire need".

Some Syrians feared more violence Tuesday after government forces bombarded East Ghouta over a two-day period, killing more than 150 civilians.

Pro-government forces - backed by Russian Federation - intensified their efforts to retake the last major rebel stronghold on Sunday night, leading to one of the heaviest bombardments in seven years of war.

The statement said Eastern Ghouta is part of a de-escalation agreement reached last May in Kazakhstan's capital Astana and the secretary-general reminds all parties, particularly the guarantors of the Astana agreement, of their commitments in this regard.
