Special counsel brings new tax charges against Paul Manafort and business associate

Special counsel brings new tax charges against Paul Manafort and business associate”

Special counsel Robert Mueller and federal prosecutors in NY are examining as much as $16 million in loans that a bank run by a former campaign adviser to President Donald Trump made to former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, according to court filings and a person familiar with the two investigations.

Manafort and Gates are already facing criminal charges by Mueller's office in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia that include conspiracy to launder money, conspiracy to defraud the United States and failure to register as foreign agents for political work they did for a pro-Russian Ukrainian political party.

The banker, Steve Calk, president of Federal Savings Bank in Chicago, sat on the Trump campaign's economic advisory council - a position that was announced in August 2016, while Manafort was chairman of the campaign.

The new indictment accuses Manafort and Gates of doctoring documents to inflate the income of their businesses and then using those fraudulent documents to obtain loans.

For now, everything Manafort gets charged with Gates is also charged with, since they are co-defendants in a conspiracy case, Reid points out.

Manafort faces 18 new charges in Virginia, while Gates faces 23 new charges.

Supreme Court Lets California's Gun-Buying Waiting Period Stand
It was created so authorities have time to do background checks and in case a person is trying to by a gun to do harm. California Deputy Attorney General Jonathan Eisenberg represented California Attorney General Xavier Becerra .

The latest development follows a flurry of indictments handed down form the special counsel's office, including another indictment on Tuesday issued against Alex Van Der Zwaan, who was charged with lying to both the special counsel's office and Federal Bureau of Investigation agents regarding his communications with Gates. The lawsuit was settled in August 2016 and the one-page filing in a NY court did not provide details of the terms.

Legal experts said the charge against Van Der Zwaan would place more pressure on Gates and Manafort to co-operate with Mr Mueller over the Russian interference investigation.

Mr. Manafort's friends have said that Mr. Mueller's indictment is an effort to pressure him into providing information about Mr. Trump and his campaign. They allegedly made false statements regarding income, debt, use of property, and false profit and loss statements.

New tax charges have been brought against President Trump's former campaign manager and business associate.

Manafort and Gates both pleaded not guilty after their indictment last fall.

A trial of Manafort and Gates is tentatively expected this fall, though recent media reports have said that Gates is expected to plead guilty in the near future.
