China seeks to scrap term limit on presidency

China seeks to scrap term limit on presidency”

The CCP Central Committee proposed removing from the constitution the expression that China's president and vice president "shall serve no more than two consecutive terms", Xinhua said.

During the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China in Beijing's Great Hall of the People last October, his ideology, or the "Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era", was at the forefront of his speech.

If the People's Congress, which begins in the capital on March 5, signs off on the changes, Xi could stay on as president after his current term. But the announcement appears to be the strongest signal yet that Xi, 64, intends to hold on to power longer than any Chinese leader in at least a generation. President Xi Jinping, seen as the country's most powerful leader since Mao Zedong, would have to step down in 2023 under the current system.

The Communist Party also proposed incorporating Xi's political thought into the Constitution.

China's constitution, first adopted in 1982, has not been amended since 2004.

Sunday's move will make Xi much more powerful than he already was, and will dampen any remnants of resistance to his rule, said Zhang Baohui, professor of worldwide affairs at Lingnan University in Hong Kong.

With Sun out of the way, the only remaining contenders for Xi's job were Sun's replacement in Chongqing, Chen Min'er, and Guangdong Province's party chief Hu Chunhua.

Mao Zedong, founder of the People's Republic of China, ruled for more than three decades until 1976.

Syrians cower in basements as bombs pound enclave
The Observatory said the bombardment had killed more than 106 adults and children in eastern Ghouta on Tuesday alone. Russian Federation must end its support of the Assad regime and its allies.

This could mean President Xi Jinping could stay in power for longer than previously expected.

But while other analysts agree that is one a reason for Xi to stay around, there are also other reasons why he may need more time.

"The law may exist in China in form, but this just proves that the Chinese law exists to serve the individual and the party's purposes".

The tradition of limiting presidencies to 10 years emerged in the 1990s, when veteran leader Deng Xiaoping sought to avoid a repeat of the chaos that had marked the Mao era and its immediate aftermath.

That, it was said, would be a sign the way was being paved for Xi to do the same beyond 2022. Officials who have reached the age of 68 or older at the time of the congress customarily retire.

Last October during annual Congress feared former head of the anti-graft agency, Wang Qishan had stepped down from the Standing Committee.

He put Wang in charge of a sweeping anti-corruption crackdown that helped Xi eliminate challengers, both serving and retired, and cow potential opponents.

Its mandate has been characterized, abroad, by an increasingly prominent presence of China on worldwide stage: Xi has presented itself as a defender of economic globalization and fight against climate change and has offered its country as an alternative to The isolationist tendencies of United States during era of Donald Trump.
