California Democrats decline to endorse Feinstein”

For the first time, California's senior senator Dianne Feinstein failed to win the backing of her party in a reelection bid. Neither candidate reached the 60 percent threshold required to receive the party endorsement for 2018.

In a statement following the vote, de León hailed the result as "an astounding rejection of politics as usual", one that signaled growing momentum for his campaign.

"The Democratic Party tends to endorse incumbents", said Rose Kapolczynski, a veteran California Democratic strategist who ran former Sen.

While it is clear that de Leon may be the favorite with party poobahs increasingly moving hard left, Feinstein is leading in the polls and has raised far more money than de Leon.

The Political Research Quarterly found that in California's "top-two" election system, the Democrat endorsement generated a gain of between 7 and 15 percent of primary votes.

Whether or not it significantly alters the trajectory of the race remains to be seen, but it's really about time that progressive Democrats and California Democrats generally think carefully about whether or not Feinstein actually represents their values.

During an interview with The Nation, de Leon explained that "it's time that we have a voice that's reflective of the California of today".

"California's greatness comes from acts of human audacity, not congressional seniority", de Leon said. Her skeptical view of single-payer health care, anti-marijuana stance, and her votes in favor of some President Donald Trump's nominations to key administration jobs rankled activists at the core of the state's Democratic Party. Feinstein, who has served in the U.S. Senate since 1992, received just 37 percent of the vote. Former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who is courting more moderate and even conservative voters, won 9 percent.

In 1990, when she declared her support for capital punishment at the convention, she was also turned down by the activist leadership.

Feinstein, the oldest member of the Senate at 84, is seeking a sixth term.
