Masters champion Sergio Garcia had a 65 and was two shots behind, along with Xander Schauffele (66) and Rafa Cabrera Bello (67). The Spaniard was flawless, holing an eagle and four birdies at Club de Golf Chapultepec.

"It's really been an experience and I just topped it off by playing well in the first two days so I'm really happy with everything".

Forty-five of the world's top 50 players are in the 64-man field competing for a prize fund of £7.2m and winner's cheque of £1.2m.

Johnson shot a five-under-par 66, while he holed out for eagle on the par-four ninth hole.

Sharma, the only two-time victor on the European Tour this season who leads the Race to Dubai, is No. 75 in the world.

Sharma overcame a pair of three-putt bogeys early in his round and was at 11-under 131.

Sharma's WGC debut comes after European Tour wins last December at the Joburg Open and last month in Malaysia at the Maybank Championship.

"I've been good at my yardages this week which I wasn't really comfortable with on Monday", he said.

"I knew I had to hit a great 3-wood", Sharma said.

An eagle on Friday at the short par-four first hole, where he drove the ball to inside two feet for a tap-in, changed that and bogeys at the next two holes proved minor setbacks. "I'm really enjoying it and that's when I'm able to play my best".

Among those is overnight leader Louis Oosthuizen, defending champion and World Number One Dustin Johnson and Thai star and Perth World Super 6 champion Kiradech Aphibarnrat.

Schauffele, the US PGA Tour's 2017 Rookie of the Year, is the only player with no bogeys after 36 holes, having opened with a 65 and followed with a 68.

Now ranked 75th in the world, he has only four weeks left to move into the top 50 and punch his ticket to Augusta.
