Cheaper Amazon Prime for Medicaid Recipients

Cheaper Amazon Prime for Medicaid Recipients”

Amazon will offer a low-priced version of its Prime membership program to qualifying recipients of Medicaid. For the same price of $5.99 per month, Amazon offers Prime memberships to any US customer with a valid Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card - the card that's used to disburse funds for assistance programs like Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and Women, Infants, and Children Nutrition Program (WIC).

Amazon Prime is a great service for anyone who regularly does their shopping online, but at $11 a month or $99 per year (if you're willing to drop that much all at once), it can be an expensive extra.

Currently, there are over 68 million people enrolled in the Medicaid program, with more than 50% of them being adults.

Through the discounted Prime membership, subscribers gain access to free, two-day shipping on many products sold through Amazon; Prime Video, the company's streaming video platform; Prime Music for streaming music; Prime Photos; Prime Reading; Prime Now; Audible Channels and other features. In June, Amazon first introduced this discounted price for shoppers who receive government assistance in the form of an Electronic Benefits Transfer card. Adding Medicaid recipients makes Prime, and its expedited shipping for no extra cost, accessible to more people, Amazon said. The online retailer also recently announced it was participating in a program led by the Department of Agriculture that will allow SNAP recipients to purchase groceries online.

Amazon has come under fire in the past for failing to accept EBT services. After a 6-month free trial, students pay $6.49 a month or $49 a year for Prime.

Customers will need to renew their membership every year and the lower rate will only be available for four years for each customer.
