ER visits for opioid overdoses soar in Wisconsin

ER visits for opioid overdoses soar in Wisconsin”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say Kentucky saw 15 percent fewer ER visits past year for overdoses.

The largest regional increase occurred in the Midwest, which saw a 69.7 percent jump in opioid overdoses, according to the report. But those increases varied dramatically from state to state, even within a region.

Nationwide, emergency room visits increased 30 percent from July 2016 to September 2017. In the first nine months of 2017, the state had 609 opioid deaths, a 5 percent decrease from the same period in 2016.

The data show that opioid overdoses increased for men and women, all age groups, and all regions, but varied by state, with differences also between rural and urban populations. Increases were seen in rates across demographic groups and all 5 USA regions; the largest increases were seen in the Southwest, Midwest, and West (about 7 to 11% per quarter).

Data from ER visits, rather than overdose deaths, is useful because they show when and where people are overdosing, information states can use to identify where resources are needed, said Dr. Anne Schuchat, acting CDC director, in a conference call Tuesday with reporters.

Overdoses from opioids have increased by 30 per cent across the U.S. in eighteen months, prompting experts to warn that the epidemic of addiction that has already claimed tens of thousands of lives is getting worse.

"People who have had an overdose are more likely to have another, so being seen in the ED is an opportunity for action", the report said. "Closer coordination between public health and public safety can serve to address changes in the illicit opioid supply and use of illicit opioids, which affects overdose rates", she continued.

Others say the key is integrating addiction treatment better into the health care system.

"There's a lot more we can do", he said.

However, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island are among states showing a decrease in such visits, according to the CDC data. Overdoses in the Southeast rose at the slowest rate, increasing by 14 percent.
