High school band trip ends in fatal crash in Alabamaā€¯

A bus carrying dozens of Texas high school band members home from a trip to Disney World plunged into a ravine off of an interstate highway in Alabama on Tuesday, killing its driver and injuring several others, authorities said.

47 passengers were on board. the driver did not make it and there's no indication that the brakes were used.

That second bus continued home and arrived safely at the high school around 1:30 p.m.

The interstate was closed in both directions as recovery efforts were underway and will remain closed while authorities investigate.

The bus was one of two on the way back to Texas after a band competition at Disney World in Florida.

The bus was being chartered by the First Class Tours of Houston company.

The company and Texas Governor Greg Abbott offer their prayers to the families involved.

Police say at least 45 people were on the bus when it swerved off Interstate 10 and plunged 60 feet into the ravine Tuesday morning. Those who were injured were taken to hospitals in Alabama and Florida.

Initial reports have suggested 52 people were on the bus.

Torres, a former Channelview High School student, said his family originally couldn't get a hold of Bianca and those moments were absolutely terrifying.

"The bus came to rest on one side down in the ravine".

Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration records show that in the last two years, the carrier has been involved in four crashes prior to Tuesday's crash, with one of those one involving one fatality.

"We are aware of numerous injuries", Ollis said in a statement.

Major Anthony Lowery with Baldwin County Sheriff's Office tells News 5 multiple helicopters are responding to an accident involving a bus on I-10 near mile marker 57.
