While the platforms that create fake news are obviously the problem, social media platforms and services like Google Search also hold some responsibility in helping such misinformation to be spread.

Google Chief Business Officer Philipp Schindler said in a blog post that the company is committing $300 million dollars over the next three years to meet its stated goals.

Google is offering publishers sweeter terms as part of a new subscriber tool announced Tuesday, currying favor with the news industry at a time when Facebook sending mixed signals to newspapers and magazines.

The search company announced the Google News Initiative, a worldwide effort in which Google will partner with news publications to help surface the most accurate information possible, especially during breaking news situations. "It's becoming increasingly hard to distinguish what's true (and not true) online".

Google has been selling search ads to retailers for a long time, and more recently has been forging deeper partnerships as it tries to fulfill its own shopping ambitions. He said YouTube plans to expand the feature to many more countries. The firm is launching Disinfo Lab, alongside the First Draft, to combat misinformation and disinformation during elections and breaking news moments.

To combat this, Google is building on last year's efforts with their system emphasizing authoritative results rather than freshness or relevancy during these crisis events. That means that as long as readers are signed in to their Google account, they don't have to deal with paywalls and logins on the news sites that they've already subscribed to.

Google's ongoing bids to stifle fake news, which have also included demoting unverified sources in its "Top News" section, follow on from findings in the 2018 Edelman Trust Barometer.

One of the other Google features in fighting disinformation will be a US$10m campaign to support global digital information literacy.
