Osaka completes dream run at Indian Wells for first titleā€

Naomi Osaka defeated Daria Kasatkina in the battle of 20-years old, in the finals of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.

Naomi Osaka had just won her first WTA title on Sunday, and was understandably finding it hard to put the achievement into words.

Osaka needed just 70 minutes to dispatch No. 19 Kasatkina, who had an equally impressive showing in the desert. With her fourth-round finish at the US Open previous year, she would begin a run of wins over all four reigning Major champions-French Open victor Jelena Ostapenko, Wimbledon champ Garbine Muguruza, US victor Sloane Stephens, and Australian champion Caroline Wozniacki, plus current No1 Halep.

The rising star from Japan won nine of her last 11 games against a fellow 20-year-old in Kasatkina, overpowering her in the return game and holding a 5-2 edge in aces to win in almost 71 minutes.

Osaka continued her dominance, breaking in the opening game of the second set before racing to a 5-1 lead with a forehand down the line.

Kasatkina was surprisingly putting in a lackluster performance and she was slow in her movement, with Osaka exploiting that aspect with her powerful play.

He didn't see much of what got Kasatkina to the final, however. She made five errors off that wing in the next seven points, and Osaka soon had the first set in hand.

Halep is seeking her second Indian Wells title after beating Jelena Jankovic in 2015. I just knew that she was going to fight for every point, too.

Kasatkina was two points from defeat, trailing 4-5 and 0-30 in the third set when Williams committed four straight errors as the Russian tied it 5-5.

Osaka is the youngest champion in Indian Wells since Ana Ivanovic (20 years, 138 days) won in 2008. "Yeah. But, during the match she was able to manage her nerves and stuff, and I was still a little bit tight during the match".

Consecutive service holds followed, though it was Osaka who faced more troubles, especially with Kasatkina earning another break point in the seventh game.

Her inexperience at making victory speeches showed.

The 20-year-old from Japan had prepared, knowing what she was going to say and in what order.

But she said she never had felt more nervous.

Afterward, she admitted, "That was pretty embarrassing".

"This is probably going to be the worst acceptance speech of all time", said Osaka, who has a Japanese mother and a Haitian father. Federer's 17-match winning streak - the best start of his career - ended. She also has a better record having gone 167-75 in singles so far compared with Osaka's 149-104.

Del Potro survived three-setters against countryman Leonardo Mayer in the fourth round and Philipp Kohlschreiber in the quarterfinals.
