WhatsApp Founder to Facebook Users: 'Delete Facebook'”

One comment on a Reddit thread about the #DeleteFacebook movement, reported on by the BBC, joked: "the rally cry to delete from Facebook is now trending as a hashtag on Twitter - another social media site that gathers data on users".

Together with co-founder Jan Koum, Acton sold WhatsApp to Facebook in the year 2014 for a sum of 19 billion dollars. As per the official report, he invests $50 million into a signal to supercharge encrypted messaging firm, a competitor to WhatsApp.

Facebook came under scrutiny recently after reports emerged out of data analytics company Cambridge Analytica has reportedly accessed company's user data of over 50 million accounts illegally without permission.

While that is a story in and of itself, today we're going to be focusing on a tweet from Brian Acton, just posted within the last 24 hours.

What makes Acton's opinion more interesting than your average commentator's hot take is that Facebook made him extremely wealthy when it bought WhatsApp back for $19bn in 2014.

The company received the user data from a Facebook app years ago that purported to be a psychological research tool, however, the firm was not authorised to have that information.

The lack of any public statement or appearance by Zuckerberg or Sheryl Sandberg, the chief operating office of Facebook, had led to growing questions about the company's response to the ongoing crisis.

European Union (EU) and British lawmakers have demanded that the social media giant clarify data breach following revelations that personal data was massively misused for political purposes. However, Facebook has been summoned by federal agencies from both the USA and the United Kingdom for an explanation to the whole episode.

Thus, Facebook's CEO Mark Zuckerberg when from a 2020 hopeful, to a political pariah, and saw $5 billion of its net worth wiped out in a single day, as shares in the social network plunged.

A whistleblower claims Cambridge Analytica used personal data, taken without authorisation in 2014, to profile individual USA voters and target them with political advertisements. Facebook also receive data on where you are and what device you are using.
