West Virginia vs Villanova odds”

BOTTOM LINE: Villanova is one of two top seeds left in the tournament following losses by Big East Conference rival Xavier and Virginia. Updates photos, links. With AP Photos.

Six players are averaging at least 8.7 points per game for West Virginia, they are Jevon Carter (7.4), Daxter Miles Jr.

Jalen Brunson, the son of Salem High hoops legend Rick Brunson, paced the Wildcats with 27 points, leading a quartet of Wildcats who scored in double figures. Another three-game streak, of course, is necessary if West Virginia wants to book a spot in the Elite 8.

The Villanova Wildcats and West Virginia Mountaineers will square off in the East Region semifinals at the TD Garden in Boston, Mass. on Friday night.

Villanova responded to tie the game at 60 as Brunson scored four points and Paschall added two free throws. Jevon Carter and Sagaba Konate both had 12 points.

This time, it took everything Villanova (33-4) had. The outside barrage helped the Wildcats overcome 16 turnovers and played into their Sweet 16 plan for their opponents nicknamed "Press Virginia": Attack the stifling defense head-on.

Kansas guard Malik Newman (14) celebrates after an NCAA men's college basketball tournament second-round game against Seton Hall Saturday, March 17, 2018, in Wichita, Kan.

"I'm so proud of our guys' leadership", Villanova coach Jay Wright said afterward. "That was the most physically demanding, mentally draining 40 minutes we've played in a long time".

Q. This is a question for any of you guys: As veterans coming into this tournament, what's your advice for the younger kids? In the first half, DiVincenzio, a 6-foot-5 sophomore, really stepped up connecting on 5-of-11 three-pointers.

The Mountaineers (26-11) stayed close throughout the night, ramping up the pressure and making Villanova play faster than it wanted to early. But West Virginia's vaunted press defense appeared to unnerve the Wildcats, who almost matched their full-game season average by turning the ball over nine times in the first 20 minutes (and who also lost DiVincenzo and star wing Mikal Bridges to foul trouble for most of the first half). "I was just trying to take the right shots and be aggressive".

The Wildcats stormed back and outscored West Virginia, 29-11, over the next nine minutes to all but put the game out of reach.

Then again, Villanova also can wear down an opponent with its depth, speed, shooting and defense.

The biggest Cinderella team remaining in March Madness continued their run with an inspired comeback and one huge shot

The Wildcats only led what was a hot Alabama outfit 32-27 at halftime but used a 24-4 run out of the locker room to take control.

"The deeper you go, the better the teams are going to be", Brunson said. "Nothing changes no matter who we play, no matter where we play, what time, what day".

WVU coach Bob Huggins, who is seventh on the NCAA's all-time victory list, said the lack of hype goes back to when his players were recruited.

"We just tried to make it hard for him", Carter commented.

After 20 minutes, it's Villanova 44, West Virginia 42.

But the Mountaineers had their moments in the first half with its press, forcing 'Nova's best-in-the-nation offense to recalibrate to handle the pressure.

"That's why they're our captains", Wright said.

"We're just going to play", Huggins said.

Villanova was one of the favorites to win the national championship before the NCAA Tournament started.

Ahmad (10.2) and Konate (10.8) provide most of the inside scoring for the Old Gold and Blue while Harris, who missed much of the Marshall game due to concussion protocol, chips in almost six points per game, but provides the length necessary to make WVU's full court pressure effective. "The team can kill zones with their 3-point shooting, and it's not going to be vulnerable to pressure".

With many eyes focused on Brunson and Carter, the former AAU teammates had their share of head-to-head possessions. When Konate rejected a Bridges fast-break dunk attempt and swaggered his way back down the floor, more than a few Wildcats fans surely thought about what had happened to so numerous tournament's other top teams and wondered whether their squad would be the next to fall.

"The seeding doesn't matter in this tournament", DiVincenzo said.

Saturday's men's basketball roundup: Villanova, Duke easily advance
Bridges and DiVincenzo each made five of Villanova's 14 three-pointers in a game that was a tale of two halves. For moneyline bets, the line is Villanova: -760, Alabama: 530 and 84.2% have picked Villanova to win the game.
