Palestinian teen filmed slapping an Israeli soldier gets eight months in jail”

Tamimi has been hailed as a hero by Palestinians who see her as bravely standing up to Israel's occupation of the West Bank has already spent 3 months in an Israeli prison and so is expected to be free in July.

The proposed arrangement, which would also see al-Tamimi pay a $1,500 fine, must still be approved by the military court.

She accepted to plead guilty to four of the 12 charges against her under the agreement, including assault, incitement and two counts of obstructing soldiers, Lasky said.

Israeli lawyer Gaby Lasky (L) speaks with her client, sixteen-years-old Ahed Tamimi (R), before she stands for a hearing at the military court in Ofer military prison, near the West Bank city of Ramallah, January 15, 2018. The young woman, who has been locked up for three months, is thus evading a major sentence by renouncing prosecutor's office to accuse her of eight or charges, so that she could leave prison next August. Tamimi's angry altercation with an Israeli soldier outside her West Bank home made her a worldwide symbol of resistance against Israeli occupation and oppresion but quickly got her jailed without bail. Her cousin, Nour, was fined 2,000 shekels and 16 days in jail.

Was it a reluctance to acknowledge that their oh so innocent and heroic Palestinian icon had actually admitted to the aggravated assault of an IDF soldier, incitement to violence and disrupting soldiers on two other occasions?

Speaking with reporters after the sentencing on Wednesday, Ahed Tamimi said, "There is no justice under occupation".

Ahed Tamimi is a minor.

Her case has become a cause célèbre in Israel and overseas, with critics accusing her and her family of orchestrating a PR campaign to discredit Israel, and supporters, mostly on the left, saying Israel is persecuting juveniles under the guise of security.

A petition calling for her release, signed by novelist Alice Walker and American actors Danny Glover and Rosario Dawson, compared Ms Tamimi to "the children of immigrants and communities of colour who face police brutality in the United States".

Just this week, on eve of trial, NGO B´Tselem presented a report in Jerusalem in which it denounces disprotection of se minors and violation of ir rights in Israeli military courts in which y are judged.

Human Rights Watch criticized Ahed Tamimi's pretrial detention, calling it "both a violation of worldwide law and unnecessary".
