Teen who fell into sewage pipe rescued after frantic search”

A 13-year-old boy was miraculously rescued after falling into a river of sewage in Los Angeles, getting swept away and spending more than 12 hours in the toxic environment of the city's mazelike underground pipeline system.

Los Angeles firefighters search for Jesse Hernandez, 13, who apparently fell down a drainage pipe in Griffith Park on Sunday, April 1, 2018.

Jesse Hernandez, who was scared, cold and hungry when he was found early this morning, is "alert and talking", the fire department said.

"Our Crisis Response Team was deployed to provide support to the family throughout the night as they waited for news of Jesse", Mayor Eric Garcetti said in a statement after the boy was found. "Thank you to the Hernandez family for your patience and optimism during this harrowing experience".

A child who had been missing for at least half a day after falling into a risky part of the Los Angeles drainage system was found alive early Monday morning, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

They narrowed the search area further after noticing the hand markings on the closed-circuit camera feed from inside a pipe. After he was decontaminated, he was taken to an area hospital for a full medical evaluation.

The workers were placing a surveillance camera in a maintenance hatch as rescue teams scoured miles of pipe when they found him.

Rescuers finally found Jesse after seeing images of handprints on a sewer. They attached a camera to a floatation device and send it 300 feet down the pipe.

A sanitation official said one of the cameras had showed "some hand markings on the sewer itself - inside - (and) it appears that he was trying to get out".

"They ... broke that maintenance hole loose, opened it, and the first thing they heard is 'help, ' " the official said.

"We maintained hope, we maintained intensity and we did not give up", Scott said. More than 100 firefighters from the Los Angeles Fire Department were on scene at 5254 West Zoo Dr.in Hollywood around 4:30 p.m. after witnesses reported the fall.

Erik Scott made the announcement at 5:41 a.m.

Cameras used to inspect pipes for fix were used to float at the top of the pipe and crawl along the bottom, Scott said.

The fire department was assisted by the LAPD, the California Highway Patrol, Los Angeles City Recreation and Parks, Park Rangers, the Department of Water and Power and the Department of Sanitation.
