Russian Federation enquiry: lawyer jailed for 30 days

Special counsel Robert Mueller reportedly told President Trump's legal team in March that the president is not a "criminal target" of the Russian Federation investigation and merely a "subject" in the probe.

Mueller's team is investigating Russian meddling in the 2016 election and has been looking into any potential ties between Russia and Trump campaign associates.

Special counsel Robert Mueller reportedly doesn't consider President Trump a "criminal target" at present, but Trump isn't out of the woods yet.

Gowdy's remarks come after a Washington Post report Tuesday night revealed that Trump is not the "target" of Mueller's investigation but rather the "subject", a distinction that Gowdy, a former federal prosecutor, said is "meaningless" to him but means a great deal more to the FBI.

In Trump's case, Mueller's reported concession that Trump isn't a target of the investigation may mean even less than in a more typical probe.

United States intelligence agencies say Russian President Vladimir Putin himself was behind a hacking and disinformation effort to disrupt the election and boost Trump's chances of winning. While Dowd and Mueller didn't know each other personally, they were of a similar age and shared a common bond over their time as prosecutors and as Marines who served in Vietnam. Typically, though, prosecutors don't decide until late in an investigation whether they will charge someone.

"All today's news tells us is that Mueller hasn't chose to indict Trump at this time". If he believes a nice little chat might clear his, um, good name, he could well be in for a most-unpleasant surprise, as not being a target now in no way guarantees that he won't become one down the line.

If Mueller accepts the finding of the OLC that a sitting president cannot constitutionally be indicted, then Trump couldn't ever be a "target" of an investigation.

Discrepancies in Spotz's alibi raised warning bells but he disappeared before police could track him down for further questioning. As part of the investigation, detectives could not corroborate details of Spotz's account and continued to look into his story.

While Trump has said he would "love" to be interviewed by Mueller "under oath", his lawyers have shot down the idea. Whilst Robert Mueller may not consider President Trump a "criminal target" at present, he is far from done with the Russian Federation investigation.

Although the USA attorney general is Jeff Sessions, the report compiled by Mueller will be confidentially sent to Deputy Attorney Rod Rosenstein because Sessions has recused himself from the ongoing investigation into the Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

White House lawyers have argued since the Nixon administration that the president can't face criminal charges because it would interfere with his or her ability to run the country.

A QuickTake: Can Trump Dismiss the Special Counsel? All of the attorneys working on the case are paid by Trump and not the ACLJ, said spokesman Gene Kapp.

The president's lawyers, according to sources familiar with internal discussions, have previously said the president should not sit down for a wide-ranging interview, and that any interview should have parameters.

One key skill an experienced defense lawyer could bring to Trump is preparing him for an interview to make sure he has an answer ready for any likely question.

Wisenberg, who interviewed Clinton about allegations that he obstructed justice, said Trump has handled himself well in previous depositions but should be cautious.
