Trump to skip White House Correspondents dinner for 2nd time

Trump to skip White House Correspondents dinner for 2nd time”

The organization said, though, that Trump "will actively encourage members of the executive branch to attend and join us as we celebrate the First Amendment".

President Trump told "Bernie & Sid in the Morning" on 77-WABC in NY during a phone interview on Friday morning that it's "unlikely" he will "do the White House correspondents' dinner this year", before adding the news media is "so bad and so fake".

"I sort of feel like the press is so bad, and so fake", he added. Just hours after the WHCA announced the president's decision, he tweeted, "Do people really believe this stuff?" On Friday, he slammed CNN for a "fake news" report on Trump's alleged plan to replace Attorney General Jeff Sessions with the head of the Environmental Protection Agency, Scott Pruitt. "So much of the media is dishonest and corrupt!" on Friday.

The annual event is ostensibly held to celebrate the First Amendment and award scholarships to promising journalism students, but is generally overshadowed by its reputation as a glitzy social event.

Trump was the first US President not to attend the event since Ronald Reagan skipped it in 1981 when he was recovering from an assassination attempt - but still managed to phone in to the event from his hospital bed.

Trump congratulates Egypt's Sisi after dubious vote
One day later, another serious contender, rights lawyer Khaled Ali withdrew, saying he and his supporters were being intimidated. The first presidential term of 63-year-old Field Marshal will officially end on June 7.

He said at the time that he would "absolutely" attend this year.

It's the second year that Trump has boycotted the annual black-tie dinner, which had been attended annually by every president for 37 years.

Trump did not elaborate on what he meant by that. At one point Mr Obama told guests Mr Trump "has spent years meeting with leaders from around the world - Miss Sweden, Miss Argentina, Miss Azerbaijan".

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders speaks during a press briefing at the White House in Washington on April 4, 2018. Most officials in his administration also snubbed the dinner. At that event, Trump offered a series of good natured one-liners in his remarks.
