CEO Zuckerberg says Facebook could have done more to prevent misuse”

Following weeks of mounting criticism, Zuckerberg is heading to Washington D.C.to answer questions from key members of Congress on data privacy issues in the wake of Facebook's Cambridge Analytica scandal.

The prepared remarks do not reveal new information about how data was shared or what Facebook will do.

"It's just scary for us grandmothers raising grandkids and having all that kind of information out there on the grandkids and myself as well", said local Facebook user Mannie Walker.

After privately assuring senators that his company will do better, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is undergoing a two-day congressional inquisition that will be very public — and could be pivotal for his massive company.

Facebook has pushed out a flurry of announcements over the past week about how it's planning to mop up the Cambridge Analytica data-scraping scandal, and it's clear from Zuckerberg's testimony that the announcements were meant to prime the pump, letting the embattled CEO claim that his company is indeed taking action.

Around 87 million users of the social network are expected to receive a message to their Facebook accounts alerting them to whether their data was misused by the firm.

"But it's clear now that we didn't do enough to prevent these tools from being used for harm as well".

San Francisco: Battered by media reports that it secretly deleted CEO Mark Zuckerberg's posts from his recipients' inboxes, Facebook is now planning to make its Unsend feature available to its over two billion users in coming months.

Facebook has said that as many as 146 million people may have received information from a Russian agency that's accused of orchestrating much of the cyber meddling in the election.

"There are going to be people who are going to say Facebook ought to be broken up", Sen. "And really, you know, what you're seeing is Facebook sending out the message incrementally that, hey, we know that our borders were porous, but we're building a wall". "I imagine that is going to cover a lot of ground", he said.

Cambridge's Psychometrics Centre is linked to the personality quizzes of both Cubeyou and Cambridge Analytica.

If, like the vast majority of Facebook users worldwide, your data wasn't swept up, you'll instead get a link to the Apps and Websites privacy page, which lets you control which third-party apps and websites have access to what data.

"I don't want anyone to use our tools to undermine democracy", Zuckerberg wrote in his testimony. The data breach reportedly goes back to 2014, when an academic of Russian origin at Cambridge University Aleksandr Kogan, created a Facebook app which paid the users to take up a psychological tests.

Some Republican lawmakers are pressing Facebook to support the Honest Ads Act, a bi-partisan bill to bring greater transparency to online political ads, along with more sweeping regulations.

According to Reuters, Facebook will try to defend calls to regulate the internet-based company.

But the biggest scandal has been over Cambridge Analytica, a data firm with ties to President Donald Trump's campaign. Any research can then be shared with the public without Facebook's permission.

To make matters worse, there has been a steady drip of damaging revelations about the company in the days leading up to Zuckerberg's testimony.
