Here's how Facebook tracks you even when you're logged out”

It will focus its attention on apps that could have gathered data not just on those who downloaded them, but also on their friends before Facebook changed its privacy rules in 2015.

"Prior to the Facebook controversy, we were developing a suite of technologies to help individuals reclaim their personal data from corporate entities and to have full transparency and control over how their personal data are used", a Cambridge Analytica spokesman said in an email to Reuters.

Most of the political ads about divisive issues that ran on Facebook Inc before the 2016 U.S. presidential election were sponsored by "suspicious groups" with no publicly available information about them, according to a study released on Monday and based on a database of five million ads on Facebook. These include offering Facebook services to third party apps or site, enhancing its own products and services and lastly improving safety and security on the social media platforms. However, with the post on Monday, the company revealed that there are lots of different methods it uses to track users, even when they're not logged into Facebook.

Facebook collects a bunch of data about you including your IP address (therefore your location), browser type, operating system. As Facebook noted, "when you visit a site or app that uses our services, we receive information even if you're logged out or don't have a Facebook account". And Amazon, Google and Twitter all offer login features. Facebook points out, correctly, that when you visit most sites, your data is actually being mined by several companies, every time.

A website typically sends two things back to your browser: first, content from that site; and second, instructions for the browser to send your request to the other companies providing content or services on the site. Cookies and device identifiers help us determine whether the person uses Facebook. If they don't, we can show an ad encouraging them to sign up for Facebook.

The government is "examining" the responses furnished by Facebook, and its vendor Cambridge Analytica, over the data breach issue, even as it keeps a close watch on global developments, especially in the USA and United Kingdom, a senior official of the IT Ministry said on Tuesday.

So once Facebook - and these other platforms - have your data, how are they using it?
