New York Mets Send Matt Harvey to Bullpen

New York Mets Send Matt Harvey to Bullpen”

NY has rotation depth at the major-league level.

Harvey set a dubious franchise record last season as a starter. "I think he's motivated to go out there and show everyone that he can start again at some point", he told reporters. "That's, right now, go to the bullpen, work on some things, get things back to where I need to be, get my s**t in order, and figure it out". With Jason Vargas on the verge of coming off the disabled list, Mickey Callaway and Sandy Alderson had a decision to make on how they would realign the rotation. The team chose the latter, hoping Matt Harvey can regain his form. "I can best help this team as a starter".

Harvey has started 104 major league games and come out of the bullpen just once, doing it last season. The Mets are leading an NL East that's much deeper than it was a year ago, and Harvey is getting hit around (40.0 percent hard-hit rate entering Thursday, per Fangraphs) as he struggles to pitch with diminished velocity.

Matt Harvey is not a starting pitcher anymore.

Wind-whipped wildfires destroy homes, prompt evacuations
As the weather conditions made it particularly unsafe for residents in the area, several evacuations occurred. Wind gusts of 40 miles per hour are forecast, half as strong as on Tuesday.

Matt Harvey did admit his pitching hasn't been good, and said on Saturday he's determined to earn his way back into the rotation.

"We admire the passion and the pride he has, and that's a big part of what's going to get him back to being a productive guy", Ricco said of Harvey. Jeurys Familia entered the game and gave up the tying run, the Mets would lose the game and the series in 12 innings by a final of 7-2.

If all goes according to plan, Harvey will be available out of the bullpen beginning on Tuesday, according to Mike Puma of the New York Mets. An All-Star in 2013, he missed half of the 2016 season for surgery to alleviate thoracic outlet syndrome. As mentioned earlier, this has continued into the 2018 season and now Harvey has been moved to the bullpen. No pitcher in Mets history has finished with an ERA as high as Harvey's in 2017; 6.70. What we do know is that he's been more of a liability than an asset for a while now. Just like Severino did with the Yankees, he needs to make his contributions felt in the bullpen by producing quality innings and proving that he can get batters out without giving up runs.
