Rohingya refugees plead for United Nations help

Rohingya refugees plead for United Nations help”

The UN team will meet Myanmar's leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who has come under global criticism for backing the ethnic cleansing campaign against the Rohingya. In a subsequent crackdown described by United Nations and US officials as "ethnic cleansing", Myanmar security forces have been accused of rape, killing, torture and the burning of Rohingya homes.

Alam said the team will meet some of the refugees today, including victims of rape and torture.

"We are standing here to demand justice as they (Burma's military) have killed our men and tortured our women so much, so we are compelled to seek justice for those abuses", Rohingya refugee Sajida Begum told Reuters.

The representatives of five permanent members of the Security Council - the USA, Russia, France, the United Kingdom and China- were present.

"How one goes about that, the prominence that one gives to the individual government, particularly the Burmese government, tends to be what divides the council and that's the old sovereignty versus human rights debate", she said.

Gustavo Meza-Cuadra, the UN Security Council president and the head of the Delegation, was also present at a media briefing at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport before leaving Dhaka for Myanmar.

Rohingya insurgent attacks on security posts in Rakhine State in August a year ago sparked a military operation that Myanmar said was a legitimate response.

"The global community should keep up pressure on the Myanmar government in this regard", she said.

Bangladesh refugee commissioner Mohammad Abul Kalam told AFP that the United Nations team - with 26 diplomats from 15 countries - first visited Konarpara camp, where some 6,000 Rohingya have been trapped on bleak scrubland since the bloodshed began past year. Many in Myanmar regard Rohingya as illegal immigrants from mostly Muslim Bangladesh.

It requests United States dollars 951 million to help respond to the needs of some 1.3 million people, both Rohingya refugees and vulnerable members of the host community, until December 2018. "They are in desperate need of support and protection and we simply do not have the funding we need to deliver a fraction of what is required", said McCue.

"The lack of a UN Security Council resolution has left the Myanmar government convinced that it has literally gotten away with mass murder", HRW executive director Kenneth Roth told reporters in Yangon.

Meanwhile, she mentioned, the Bangladesh Foreign Minister and Home Minister visited Myanmar while Myanmar Social Welfare Minister visited Bangladesh.

Buddhist-majority Myanmar has for years denied Rohingya citizenship, freedom of movement and access to basic services such as healthcare. Myanmar authorities claim the military operation in Rakhine is aimed at rooting out extremists and have denied nearly all reports of alleged atrocities committed by its security forces in the region.

The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court has asked it to rule on whether it has jurisdiction over the deportations of Rohingyas to Bangladesh, a possible crime against humanity.
