Mormon Church breaks all ties with Boy Scouts, ending 100-year relationship

Mormon Church breaks all ties with Boy Scouts, ending 100-year relationship”

The church, based in Utah, now claims 16 million members in almost 200 countries, but its Scout program served boys mostly in North America. While most of the re-branding and changes will rollout in early 2019, several Cub Scout groups across the nation have opted to participate in an "Early Adopter Program" which is allowing girls to join immediately.

Church officials attributed its changing needs to its increasingly global membership - more than half of the church's 16 million members live outside the US and Canada.

"While the church will no longer be a chartered partner of BSA or sponsor Scouting units after December 31, 2019, it continues to support the goals and values reflected in the Scout Oath and Scout Law and expresses its profound desire for Scouting's continuing and growing success in the years ahead", according to the statement.

Tensions with the Boy Scouts started to rise in 2015 when the scouts announced that they would allow gay people to be troop leaders.

Several supported the Boy Scouts in its future moving forward from the break-no jab at the Mormon Church in sight.

The Mormon church, meanwhile, teaches that gay relationships are sinful.

Since 2008, the organization has reportedly faced over 200 federal lawsuits, including many that claim abuse of young scouts by adults.

"We are confident that many LDS Scouting families will go on to enjoy Scouting for years to come - continuing the legacy of LDS youth who have become Eagle Scouts and community leaders", the BSA said in a statement to Newsweek. "In so doing, it will be necessary for the Church to discontinue its role as a chartered partner with BSA", the statement read.

The Great Salt Lake Council, northern Utah's Boy Scouts of America council, also released a statement Tuesday night, expressing their gratitude for the organization's partnership with the church. One by one, they declared that they were joining Pack 212 in northwestern Wisconsin and put on their new Cub Scout hats. Many individual troops are chartered by faith-based organizations, however, and Mormons make up around 20 percent of its membership, according to The Washington Post.

The Boy Scouts's move to allow girls, announced last October, marked the organization's latest momentous policy shift.

Girl Scouts has worked closely with girls, volunteers, and staff to ensure its programs are what girls want and need.

Historically, the LDS church has been the biggest sponsor of BSA in the country.

Church leaders say they will create their own youth program.

Rich Baker, who served for seven years as a scoutmaster for Troop 66 in Belmont, Massachusetts, said he was sorry to see the church drop Scouting, but that it "was never quite fully embraced".
