104-year-old scientist ends life listening to 'Ode to Joy'

104-year-old scientist ends life listening to 'Ode to Joy'”

Goodall traveled to Switzerland to die because assisted suicide is illegal in Australia, National Public Radio reported.

In his final hours, Goodall enjoyed his favourite dinner: fish and chips and cheesecake. Exit International, which represented the scientist, said Goodall passed away while listening to Beethoven's "Ode to Joy". A doctor put a cannula in his arm, and Mr. Goodall turned a wheel to allow the solution to flow, Exit International said. Assisted dying, where patients take the final action to end their lives, is legal in Canada, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Switzerland and parts of the US.

Goodall, a botanist and ecologist who was thought to be Australia's oldest scientist, said on his 104th birthday last month he had simply lived too long.

His final wish was for his body to be either donated to medicine or cremated and the ashes "sprinkled locally", the right-to-die organization revealed. Hence, he is not eligible to move to the Australian state of Victoria to die there under its new euthanasia legislation.

"That which I would like is to get different states to follow Switzerland's guide and make them facilities available for all clients, should they satisfy certain demands, and also certain requirements perhaps not only of age, but instead of mental capacity". "I am happy to have the chance tomorrow to end it", he said.

In the end, Goodall said, he would like to be remembered "as an instrument of freeing the elderly" to choose their own death.

Nitschke said that before he died, Goodall had to answer "several questions so he knew who he was, where he was and what he was about to do".

However, the Australian Medical Association's president, Dr Michael Gannon, says he was concerned that the "suicide of someone who's aged 100" was being celebrated.

"I greatly regret having reached that age", he said upon reaching his 104th birthday.

"My life has been out in the field (working), but I can't go out in the field now", he told CNN on Tuesday. I'll be even more pleased when further steps of my journey are completed.

"As a Christian we don't have a right over our life and particularly under worldwide law there is no right to die".

After his retirement in 1979, Goodall edited a 30-volume series of books referred to as "eco systems of earth", written by more than 500 authors.

University officials later reversed their decision.
