UK's Former Culture Secretary Has Died At Age 70”

The dedicated former minister has been particularly praised for her success in bringing the Olympics to London and her campaigning on cancer research.

Having pushed the British government to bid for the Olympics, her joy on securing the games for London was short-lived. The 23-year-old had expected to lose in the new Swiss Cottage ward, but unexpectedly topped the ballot and at just 25, she became Camden's Chair of Social Services.

Cllr Peter John tweeted: "Following the sad death of Dame Tessa Jowell, who served as constituency MP for Dulwich & West Norwood between 1992 and 2015, Lambeth and Southwark Councils are opening books of condolence at their respective Town Halls".

In 2012 she was made Dame Tessa Jowell in the Birthday Honours for political and charitable services, which were partly in recognition of her work on the Olympics.

Ed Miliband, who was Labour leader during the games, said at the time she had left an "enormous" legacy and that the country owed her a "debt of gratitude".

In 1997 she was one of the 101 female Labour MPs on the Government benches following the party's landslide victory who were dubbed, in less self-aware times, the "Blair Babes".

Ashford MP Damian Green told Kent Online: "Tessa Jowell was one of the few politicians who had respect, admiration and friendship from all sides in the House of Commons".

A succession of ministerial jobs followed, including employment minister and minister for women, before she joined the Cabinet as culture secretary in 2001.

Footballer David Beckham, who was an ambassador during the Olympic bid, posted on Instagram that "amazing woman" Dame Tessa "will be missed by so many".

Ferguson surgery: Drogba, Ronaldo & Beckham show support
Thoughts are with you and your family. "Hoping the great man does what he does best and wins this challenge", he added. Willie Miller, who served as Aberdeen captain under Ferguson, said he was "staggered" to hear the news.

Her backing for the games was not unquestioning however.

"She corralled government behind an east of London bid, she had to do that to get the support of the Mayor (of London), but actually the success of London in terms of regenerating Stratford directly comes from that decision".

Former prime minister Gordon Brown said Dame Tessa would be remembered for her "courage, strength and compassion for others". In 2009, he was sentenced to 4½ years in prison.by an Italian court for taking a bribe from former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi in exchange for false testimony at corruption trials.

Elsewhere, tributes have flooded in from Dame Tessa's colleagues in Westminster.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two children.

She had been in a coma until her death at home on Saturday.

In recent months she campaigned for more cancer treatments to be made available through the NHS.

During a speech to the House of Lords in January, Jowell said: "I hope that this debate will give hope to other cancer patients, like me, so we can live well together with cancer, not just dying of it".
