Acclaimed author Tom Wolfe dead at 87”

Tom Wolfe, an innovative journalist and novelist whose Technicolor, wildly punctuated prose brought to life the worlds of California surfers, auto customizers, astronauts and Manhattan's moneyed status-seekers in works like "The Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby", "The Right Stuff" and "Bonfire of the Vanities", died Monday in a New York City hospital.

As a reporter, Wolfe became part of the new journalism movement of the 1960s and 70s, which featured the likes of Truman Capote, Hunter S Thompson and Norman Mailer.

His agent, Lynn Nesbit confirmed his death. "All the same, he was one of the most modest and kindest people I have ever met". He died May 14, 2018, at a New York City hospital at age 88. His 1968 book The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, detailing the free-wheeling lifestyle of writer Ken Kesey and his followers known as the Merry Pranksters, is widely considered the finest example of the style.

The National Book Awards also paid tribute.

Wolfe first started off as a reporter in the late 1950s, working for the Springfield Union, before being hired by The Washington Post in 1959. He cemented his reputation with Radical Chic & Mau-Mauing the Flak Catchers and The Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby, collections of his articles and essays. "He goes out and writes a best-selling novel".

The Right Stuff, Wolfe's 1979 account of the early days of the USA space program and the test pilots recruited for it, remains his best-selling work. Since childhood, Tom Wolfe dreamed of becoming a writer. From re, he begins his free fall and, in parallel to it, Wolfe portrays entire underworld of city. Wolfe slammed both Charles Darwin and linguist Noam Chomsky in the book. He was 87 years old.
