Cambridge Analytica whistleblower Christopher Wylie testifies before Senate

Cambridge Analytica whistleblower Christopher Wylie testifies before Senate”

Wylie is the pink-haired Canadian data scientist whose decision to blow the whistle on the use of Facebook data by Cambridge Analytica set off shock waves that are still reverberating through Westminster, Washington DC, and Silicon Valley.

The company said it had agreed to the proposal "to meet with leaders of the European Parliament and appreciate the opportunity for dialogue, to listen to their views and show the steps we are taking to better protect people's privacy".

That suggests he will avoid an uncomfortable public appearance and instead meet only with the legislature's top brass behind closed doors.

Across the Atlantic, meanwhile, the European Parliament is still requesting that Zuckerberg come testify in person.

After receiving the letter, the Committee insisted that Facebook's answers did not fully answer the questions with sufficient detail or data evidence, and that it would be writing to the company again to address these significant gaps. It's been accused of gathering data from as many as 87 million Facebook users without their explicit consent.

Yet the question of whether Zuckerberg should explain himself publicly remains a point of contention.

Sterling falls as Bank of England keeps rates on hold
For 2019 and 2020, it predicted GDP growth would pick up to 1.7 per cent, down from 1.8 per cent in its February forecasts. Recent data also showed United Kingdom inflation unexpectedly slowed in March to 2.5 percent - the lowest level in a year.

"It must be a public hearing - why not a Facebook Live", he asked in a Tweet.

"The founder and CEO of Facebook has accepted our invitation and will be in Brussels as soon as possible, hopefully already next week", Tajani said in a statement.

In a tweet, Mr Tajani said: "Our citizens deserve a full and detailed explanation".

In early March, it turned out that the British company Cambridge Analytica pulled data from Facebook users to use them in political advertising in different countries.

"We suspended the myPersonality app nearly a month ago because we believe that it may have violated Facebook's policies", Mr. Archibong said Monday in response to an AFP inquiry. But he added that, if Zuckerberg will not be in the United Kingdom at any time during the course of the inquiry, then the committee "would also be open to taking his evidence by video link".

Yet despite such threats, Zuckerberg appears to have been unfazed and declined to pop over the pond to face-off with MPs. Zuckerberg was warned that, if he did not voluntarily attend a committee hearing, he was liable to face a formal summons to do so the next time he is in the UK.
