Subtropical Storm Alberto begins to bring heavy rain into Central Florida

Subtropical Storm Alberto begins to bring heavy rain into Central Florida”

Beaches in Florida were largely empty ahead of Memorial Day as a slowly intensifying storm carrying brisk winds and heavy rain approached the U.S. Gulf Coast on Sunday. On Sunday morning, the storm was located about 150 miles (240 km) northwest of the Dry Tortugas, which is nearly 70 miles (113 km) west of Key West, Florida, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Tropical storm warnings and watches have been issued for parts of the MS coast all the way to the western Gulf Coast of Florida.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch from Sunday evening until Monday morning for the northern two-thirds of the state.

Coastal areas could also experience 2 to 4 feet of storm surge. Heavy rain, flooding and possible tornadoes were also anticipated with the storm. Alberto is expected to move inland into the Tennessee Valley on Tuesday and move into the Ohio Valley on Wednesday.

Subtropical Storm Alberto is expected to hit the panhandle of Florida Monday afternoon while bringing the threat for heavy rain, gusty winds, and unsafe storm surge for those areas.

The hurricane centre said Sunday that a tropical storm warning was in effect from Bonita Beach, Fla., to the Mississippi-Alabama border.

Otherwise continued windy with spotty tropical downpours Sunday night, then the chance of periods of heavy rain increases Monday afternoon.

His agent, Lynn Nesbit confirmed his death. "All the same, he was one of the most modest and kindest people I have ever met". His biggest hit, " The Bonfire of the Vanities ", was a lacerating satire of money, power and NY life in the '80s.

The storm now has maximum sustained winds of almost 50-miles-per-hour and is likely to become a tropical storm.

The Liberty County Sheriff's Office and Liberty County Emergency Management says they are making preparations to ensure they are prepared to respond to any impacts. Little change in strength is expected before Alberto reaches the northern Gulf Coast. Lingering moisture will likely lead to several more days of enhanced rainfall across the peninsula, but the coastal hazards should subside some Monday and Tuesday. The official National Hurricane Center forecast released Thursday said the season is likely to be near or above normal.

Rain chances are expected be high for the rest of the week with some improvement by next weekend.

But where and when the storm will make landfall depends on when the storm makes a northwest turn in the central Gulf of Mexico. Rappaport found that during the 50-year period of 1963 to 2012, about half of all US deaths from tropical cyclones were caused by storm surge.

The storm was about 130 miles west-southwest of Tampa, moving north at 14 mph, the hurricane center said.

Winds of 40 mph extend outward up to 115 miles (185 km) from the center. The storm is moving toward the northwest near 9 miles per hour (15 km/h).
