USA governor resigns amid sex scandal, finance probe

USA governor resigns amid sex scandal, finance probe”

After resisting bipartisan calls in recent months for his resignation, the first-term Republican governor abruptly announced on Tuesday that he would step down on Friday.

The Midwestern US state's legislature, controlled by the governor's own party, was in the midst of a special session to consider whether Greitens should be impeached, when the governor announced his resignation would be effective Friday evening.

"I remain confident we have the evidence required to pursue charges against Mr. Greitens, but sometimes pursuing charges is not the right thing to do for our city or our state", Gardner said.

Many questioned why she would praise the service of someone who took action to reverse the city's long-sought minimum wage increase for St. Louis workers, something Krewson supported.

Greitens' other scandal involved allegations of an extramarital affair and felony invasion of privacy, but Gardner's office got embarrassed by investigatorial incompetence and withdrew the charge. The charge was dropped in early May, but Special Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker is now deciding whether or not to refile.

A source close to Greitens said Gardner would drop the felony data-tampering charge. But his departure was days in the making, as Greitens wrestled with mounting legal bills and the emotional pressures of defending against possible impeachment and a criminal trial.

The accuser's disturbing allegations were detailed in a report by a Special Investigative Committee on Oversight of the Missouri House of Representatives.

"It's clear for the forces that oppose us there's no end in sight".

Baker released a statement sating that no deals have been made with her office and that her review of the case will continue without fear or favor.

Gov. Mike Parson says the resignation of Republican Gov. Eric Greitens "will allow our state to heal and move forward from what has been a hard time". He is accused of illegally obtaining a donor list to aid his 2016 election campaign from a veterans' charity he founded in 2007.

Greitens said the decision to resign was a hard one, but maintained that he's done nothing wrong.

"This is not the end of our fight", Greitens said.

A probable cause statement said Greitens did not have permission from the charity The Mission Continues to take that list.

A St. Louis prosecutor said Wednesday that she is dismissing felony computer-tampering charges against Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens (R), who announced his resignation on Tuesday amid multiple scandals that marred his once-promising political career. And, she insisted of the two cases she brought against the governor, "These cases were not pursued at the expense of my office's priorities".

Earlier Tuesday, a judge also ruled that a secretive pro-Greitens nonprofit group called A New Missouri must comply with a legislative subpoena for any documents or communications showing potential coordination between the organization, Greitens and his campaign committee.

"I think what folks need to know is it's now time to leave the governor alone and let him and his family heal", Martin said.

The governor, who also served as a White House fellow and wrote a best-selling book, entered the 2016 gubernatorial race as an outsider.
