Manafort accused of trying to tamper with witnesses in cases”

U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller says in a court filing that former Donald Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort attempted to tamper with potential witnesses in his own bank and tax fraud case.

The filing says that FBI Special Agent Brock W. Domin's testimony and evidence will show that Manafort attempted to tamper with witnesses.

Mr. Manafort was released to home confinement after his arraignment in October.

If a judge were to revoke Manafort's bail conditions and order him to jail pending his two trials this summer, that would intensify the pressure on him to reach a plea deal with prosecutors.

Federal Bureau of Investigation agent, Brock Domin, wrote in court documents that at least one witness reported Mr Manafort's contact and said he appeared to be trying to change their story about his lobbying practices.

According to Domin, Manafort's communications were "an effort to influence their testimony and to otherwise hide evidence".

The documents say Manafort then used a text-message encryption application to contact the witness, writing "This is Paul" and "We should talk".

"I've seen this kind of witness tampering hundreds of times", the veteran former prosecutor said.

Paul Manafort, Donald Trump's former campaign manager, has been indicted on a plethora of charges of conspiracy, money laundering, and failure to register as a foreign agent.

Former House Speaker and Trump ally Newt Gingrich warned President Trump against pardoning himself should special counsel Robert Mueller pursue charges in the ongoing Russian Federation investigation, telling "CBS This Morning" on Tuesday that it would be an "arrogant statement of power" if he did so.

He has pleaded not guilty.

Manafort allegedly paid the group some $2.5 million in 2012 and 2013 alone.

The charges - they involve tens of millions of dollars routed through offshore accounts - do not relate to his work on the Trump campaign or involve allegations of Russian election interference. "I have made clear that they worked in Europe".

Manafort is now out on house arrest and a $10 million unsecured bail.

Monday's court filing highlighted anew the role of "Person A", whom prosecutors did not name but described in detail in related cases.

It's the latest salvo from Trump in his bid to discredit the ongoing probe by special counsel Robert Mueller. But prosecutors say they worked with Manafort in organizing a group of former European officials who lobbied within the US without registering. He has pleaded not guilty to charges related to his failure to disclose his United States lobbying work for a foreign government and to bank fraud and other financial crimes.
