Sharapova, Muguruza book place in French Open last 16”

Williams pulled out of the French Open less than an hour before she was supposed to face Maria Sharapova in a fourth-round showdown Monday, the most-anticipated match of the tournament so far.

Sharapova, victor of the title in Paris in 2012 and 2014, will now face the victor of No.3 seed Garbiñe Muguruza and Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko for a spot in the semifinals.

Serena also revealed that she will stay in Paris to undergo an MRI on Tuesday.

"I was looking forward to my match against Serena today and am disappointed that she had to withdraw", the 28th seed said. And while she's "pretty much had every injury in the book", this was the first time dealing with this particular malady.

"I have cried in the locker room many times after a loss, and that's what I have seen a lot of people do. I just started. So I'm just really trying to get my bearings and trying to feel out where I am and see where I can go", Serena stated.

She stunned the world in 2004, when, as a 17-year-old kid, she defeated the favourite Serena Williams for the Wimbledon crown, and rocketed to superstardom.

"So it's really hard to be in this situation, but I just always try to think positive and just think of the bigger picture and hopefully the next events and the rest of the year".

PSerena Williams reportedly hurt her arm while playing in a doubles match with sister Venus.

"I'm just going to do what the doctor thinks I should do and get all the evaluations on it". I put everything on the court, all for this moment.

"Physically I'm doing great".

Sharapova conceded her service game once in the first set, but managed to break her rival's three times to move a set closer to victory. I sacrificed so much to be at this event.

"I tried a lot of different tapings and support and it didn't really get a lot better", the American added.

"I can only take solace in the fact I'm going to continue to get better".

In a statement released by the tournament, Sharapova wished Williams "a speedy recovery".
