MACRON’S MUTINY: French President TURNS on TRUMP Ahead of G7 Summit

MACRON’S MUTINY: French President TURNS on TRUMP Ahead of G7 Summit”

"At the same time we will not stop trying to convince our American friends and President Trump that undermining this order makes no sense at all, because it would only play into the hands of those who seek a new post-West order where liberal democracy and fundamental freedoms would cease to exist".

Although Trump said the tariffs are necessary to protect USA industry, Canada and the European Union have denounced them as illegal and are preparing retaliatory measures.

And now, Morneau added the tariffs to Canada's list of deal breakers on NAFTA.

He later said that Russia's return to the group would be "an asset" and that it would be a good move for peace in the world.

He did not explain what kind of trade deal he was looking for.

Trump addressed the subject of worldwide trade during an impromptu news conference at the summit on Saturday, saying that he does not want to see other countries take advantage of the United States over trade.

Trump, who repeated that his tariffs are meant to protect USA industry and workers from unfair worldwide competition, told reporters he had suggested to the other G7 leaders that all trade barriers, including tariffs and subsidies, be eliminated.

This year's summit, however, comes at a time of increasing tensions.

"The other leaders have been calling this G6 + 1 because Trump has been so isolated ever since this began, and that's because he launched an outright attack - that's in the view of the other members - on the global trading system by raising tariffs on steel and aluminum".

He then issued an ultimatum: "Why isn't the European Union and Canada informing the public that for years they have used massive Trade Tariffs and non-monetary Trade Barriers against the U.S. Totally unfair to our farmers, workers & companies".

Trudeau on Saturday rejected a US demand for a sunset clause in NAFTA but said he was prepared to compromise on the issue, which is holding up talks to update the 1990s-era pact.

During a brief meeting with reporters at the Quebec resort where the leaders gathered, Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau - who had been at each other's throats for a week - even shared a few jokes.

On Wednesday, the European Union announced $3 billion worth of tariffs on USA products in retaliation would go into effect next month.

The confrontation over US tariffs on steel and aluminum threatened to rupture the G7, which during its 43-year history has traditionally sought to find consensus on the economy and other issues.

President Trump concluded his visit to the Group of Seven summit on Saturdaywith warnings to USA allies, saying if they don't eliminate barriers to trade, they could lose access to the US economy. "His preference now, and he asked me to convey this, is to actually negotiate with Mexico and Canada separately", Kudlow said on Fox News on Tuesday. I may have had a much different attitude.

The president also signaled that his Nafta partners would pay a bigger price if there's no agreement. "He's just going to try a different approach".

Special counsel Robert Mueller is now investigating whether associates of Mr Trump's presidential campaign colluded with Russian Federation in a bid to sway the 2016 election.

Trump blasted both Trudeau and Macron on Twitter ahead of the G7 summit, which he was reportedly wary of attending.

The U.S. president did not appear to be listening during some of the trade presentations, another G7 official familiar with the meeting said.

The G7 meeting had threatened to fall apart this week because of the burgeoning trade war.

So at the G7 in Charlevoix, Quebec on Friday, some were speculating whether when he shook Trump's hand with a grip so firm the U.S leader was left with white marks, he was showing how he really felt.

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte arrives in Canada for the G7.
